According to the National Institute of Mental Health , 74% of Americans dread talking in front of an audience. Public Speaking expert Dan Roam says its time to shake the angst. He says that those able to stand in front of a room of people and speak are the same people who get the bonuses and the accolades. Roam has come up with a plan to design talks to make speakers more comfortable.
Plan
Practice is the key to overcoming your fear. The more you do it the better you will get. Think about why you are speaking in the first place and consider the construction of what you want to say. Run through your speech time and time again exactly how you will perform it in front of your audience.
Keep it real
Genuine presenters resonate with their listeners more than those who blow speeches out of proportion. It doesn’t have to be spontaneous, just not fake and overbearing.
Spell it with savvy
There is more than one message you are trying to get across. Your goal of a presentation may be to change minds during a sales pitch or shift emotions and culture with a motivational speech. In the grand scheme of things, you’re usually communicating data.
Get to the point
Be sure not to bury your lead. A good presentation always has a comprehensible message and story line. It is not endless, confusing of jumbled.
Be a catalyst
Be a way to change the audience. To do this you must understand what exactly is the story we want to get across.
Picture It
As you prepare for your talk, think about a basic delivery structure or story line. Invision the audience before you eager to listen. Data should be distributed throughout the story and the pitch must be identifiable.
Animate
Consider adding charts, graphs, or animations to your speech. If you are bad at art, even doodles will do.
