Jamal Khashoggi: Why is U.S. so cozy with Saudi Arabia’s brutal regime?

October 17, 2018 by Dominic Carter

It survived the 1973 oil embargo. It endured 15 Saudi nationals who were named as hijackers in the 9/11 attacks. Can the United States’ relationship with Saudi Arabia weather the apparent killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a dissident Saudi journalist who lived in the U.S.?

Khashoggi is presumed dead after he disappeared on Oct. 2. after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The case has brought intense pressure on Saudi Arabia to explain what happened. It has also led to new scrutiny of the U.S.-Saudi relationship. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was dispatched to Riyadh on Tuesday and on Wednesday he will visit Turkey’s capital Ankara to discuss the Khashoggi case.
