Pittsburgh shooting: Prosecutors press for death penalty

October 29, 2018 by Dominic Carter

The long-haul trucker accused of fatally shooting 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue arrived at a federal courthouse Monday for his first court appearance as prosecutors pressed for the death penalty in the heinous attack.

Robert Bowers, who was wounded in a gunfight with police during Saturday’s carnage at Tree of Life Synagogue, was released from a local hospital hours before the hearing was scheduled to take place.

Scott Brady, the U.S. attorney for the western district of Pennsylvania, said he has begun the process of gaining the approval of  Attorney General Jeff Sessions to pursue a capital case against Bowers. Sessions’ approval is a requirement in federal cases.

President Trump expressed support for Brady’s position, saying that “when people do this, they should get the death penalty. And they shouldn’t have to wait years and years.”
